VINsight Privacy Policy

VINsight (“the app”) is developed by Neobile LLC. This policy explains what VINsight does, and does not do, with data.

The core promise: vehicle data only

VINsight returns vehicle information only — never personal or owner data. It looks up a vehicle's specifications, safety recalls, NHTSA ratings, complaint summaries, and EPA fuel economy from a VIN. It does not return, request, or store any person's name, address, contact details, or registration-holder identity. This is a deliberate, hard product boundary, consistent with the Driver's Privacy Protection Act (DPPA) and analogous laws. VINsight is not a tool for locating, identifying, or surveilling people.

What is sent over the network

• When you run a lookup, the VIN (or a year/make/model derived from it) is sent to free public U.S.-government APIs — NHTSA (vPIC decoder, recalls, safety ratings, complaints) and the EPA (fueleconomy.gov) — to retrieve vehicle data. These services return vehicle information, not people.
• We do not attach your identity to these requests, we do not run profiling analytics, and we do not sell data.

What stays on your device

• Your Garage (the vehicles you choose to keep, with their decoded specs, recalls, ratings, and fuel data) is stored locally using Apple's SwiftData framework. It is not uploaded to us. iCloud sync is off in this version.
• Recall monitoring runs entirely on your device. For vehicles you choose to monitor (a Pro feature), VINsight periodically re-checks NHTSA using iOS background app refresh and, if a new recall appears, shows a local notification. There is no push server and no tracking — the check and the alert happen on your device.
• VIN validation and the plain-language summary run on your device. On an Apple-Intelligence iPhone (iOS 26), the summary uses Apple's on-device language model; on other devices it uses a built-in deterministic template. Your VINs are not sent to any AI service, and the summary only ever describes real decoded fields, recall counts, ratings, and fuel figures.

Permissions

• Camera — used only when you choose to scan a VIN. You can always type it.
• Notifications — requested only when you enable recall monitoring, so VINsight can alert you about a new recall. Optional; the app works without them.

You can change these any time in the Settings app.

Acceptable use

VINsight is for checking vehicles — for example, when buying a used car or keeping an eye on your own. You may not use VINsight to attempt to identify, locate, contact, track, or harass any person. Any such use is prohibited.

What VINsight does NOT do

• No personal or owner data — ever. No names, addresses, or identities.
• No account or sign-up.
• No advertising SDKs and no cross-app tracking.
• No selling, renting, or sharing of data with third parties.
• No guaranteed vehicle-history claims and no market valuation; recalls, ratings, and complaints are shown as reported by NHTSA, and fuel figures as published by the EPA.

Purchases

In-app purchases (VINsight Pro) are handled entirely by Apple through the App Store/StoreKit. The developer never receives your payment details; the app only learns whether you currently have an active purchase, validated on-device via StoreKit.

Children's privacy

VINsight is not directed to children and does not knowingly collect data from anyone, including children.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this same URL with a new “Last updated” date.
